But if I had to choose the best best man speech I’ve ever heard, Sam’s would be very hard to beat.

Sam delivered this speech at Cameron and Alysia’s wedding at Tiffany’s Maleny on the Sunshine Coast. What makes it stand out isn’t simply the number of laughs he gets from the room. He tells personal stories, involves the guests, celebrates the groom and his bride, and knows exactly when to shift from humour to something more heartfelt.

He doesn’t spend the entire speech trying to make the room laugh. Instead, he uses humour to tell stories about his friendship with Cameron, then gradually brings the focus back to the groom, the bride and their future together.

A great best man speech should feel like it could only have been written by the person giving it. Sam achieves that by drawing on his own experiences and telling stories that reveal something about Cameron.

He talks about Cameron’s growth, his achievements and his relationship with Alysia before telling him how proud he is to call him his best mate.

After the final joke, Sam doesn’t keep going. He simply brings everyone together:

“Can we all please raise a glass to Cam and Alysia!”

Once you’ve delivered the stories and sentiments you wanted to share, don’t feel the need to add another joke or keep talking. Sometimes the strongest ending is simply knowing when you’ve finished.
