The Beautiful Hawaiian Wedding of Soul Surfer Bethany Hamilton

Flying to Hawaii to film a wedding is a dream for any videographer, but when that wedding belongs to Bethany Hamilton, the legendary Soul Surfer, it becomes something truly unforgettable. I had the incredible honor of capturing Bethany and Adam’s beautiful Kauai celebration, and it remains one of the most inspiring weddings I’ve ever filmed.
Bethany Hamilton is a professional surfer from Hawaii who became widely known for her inspirational story of resilience and courage after surviving a shark attack at the age of 13. Despite losing her left arm in the attack, she continued to pursue her passion for surfing and went on to become a successful professional surfer, winning numerous championships and accolades.
Bethany’s extraordinary story of courage and triumph caught the attention of Hollywood, leading to the creation of a captivating movie that brought her incredible journey to the big screen. “Soul Surfer,” the film adaptation of her life, chronicles her unyielding spirit, the challenges she faced, and her awe-inspiring comeback.
The story of Bethany Hamilton has resonated with people from all walks of life. Her unwavering determination and ability to overcome adversity have made her an inspiration to millions, proving that with resilience and a positive mindset, anything is possible.

The Bohemian-Themed Wedding Ceremony
When I arrived at the secluded 130-acre estate on Kauai’s north shore, I knew this was going to be something special. The location alone was breathtaking – a private paradise near Bethany’s hometown, with 300 of her closest friends and family gathered to witness the celebration.
What struck me immediately was how perfectly the bohemian theme reflected Bethany and Adam as a couple. The entire wedding party – all thirteen bridesmaids and eight groomsmen, plus the bride and groom – were barefoot. There’s something beautifully authentic about feeling the grass beneath your feet as you make the most important commitment of your life.
The details told their story, too. Bethany’s white gold ring held a two-carat diamond, while Adam wore a band crafted from local Koa wood and titanium – a perfect blend of elegance and the natural elements they both love. They’d written their own vows, and as I filmed their exchange, the raw emotion was palpable.
Standing behind my camera, watching Bethany and Adam promise their lives to each other, I witnessed something truly moving. Tears and laughter flowed freely – not just from the couple, but from everyone present. These weren’t staged moments; this was pure, unfiltered love.

Bethany later shared her feelings about the day:
“Our wedding was beautiful. I’m now married to the love of my life. There are no words to fully describe what went on in my heart on our wedding day. I was full of joy, thankfulness, and excitement to share life with my husband, Adam. Having our loved ones and a ton of our great friends made it incredibly special. It was above anything I had dreamed of!”
“During our ceremony, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face besides when I was holding in my tears. Taking a big step: to step away from my parents and cling to my husband for the rest of our lives. I’m thankful for all that my parents have been to and for me and for the new life and adventure with Adam. My best friend and husband.”

The Reception

As the sun set over Kauai and the stars began to emerge, the reception transformed into something magical. I’ve filmed countless receptions, but there was something uniquely enchanting about this celebration under the Hawaiian night sky.
The attention to detail was stunning. Every table featured elegant floral arrangements that reflected Bethany’s deep connection to nature and the ocean. Soft candlelight created this warm, intimate glow that was perfect for filming – the kind of natural lighting that makes everything look cinematic. The décor wove in beautiful coastal elements – seashells, driftwood, and touches of beachy charm that felt organic rather than overdone.
The food was incredible, showcasing the best of Hawaii’s culinary traditions. Fresh seafood, tropical-inspired cocktails, and dishes bursting with island flavors – it was a feast that honored the location as much as the couple. Between filming speeches, I may have sampled a bite or two myself.

Speaking of speeches – this is always one of my favorite parts to capture. Throughout the evening, friends and family shared heartfelt toasts that revealed just how deeply Bethany and Adam are loved. There were tears, laughter, and stories that painted a beautiful picture of who they are as individuals and as a couple. Capturing those raw, emotional moments is why I do what I do.
Then came the first dance. Bethany and Adam took the floor to “The Three of Us” by Ben Harper, and I made sure to capture every moment. The way they moved together, the chemistry between them – it was one of those scenes that practically films itself. You can see a glimpse of it in their highlight video above, but being there in person, watching their love story unfold through my lens, was truly special.

Adam Dirks Reflects on His Wedding Day with Bethany Hamilton
“Bethany and I had been praying for and anticipating our union for months, and August 18, 2013, turned out to be the most beautiful and blessed day possible. It was amazing to see so many friends and family come together in support of our relationship. We were so grateful for the amazing work that was put in by our friends and family to make our wedding incredible.”
“But what brought all the busyness and shaky nerves to a sudden calm was when my bride appeared on the other end of the grassy aisle. The sun shone on Bethany’s smile, and time seemed to slow as she made her way to the beautiful flower-laden altar. My heart was going to burst with love and joy as she joined me.’
“We both were holding back tears as we repeated vows and shared our own personal vows. The partaking of Christ’s body and our union under His name are standing promises that will hold our relationship together till death do us part. God truly blessed our wedding day.”
