Getting Married Means You’ll Have | Wedding Reading with Video Example

Looking for a wedding reading that’s heartfelt, playful, and meaningful? Getting Married Means You’ll Have by Nicholas Gordon is a charming poem that celebrates the joys and little perks of having a life partner who’s always there for you.

I filmed this reading at a wedding ceremony in Brisbane, and one of the highlights was seeing the 10-year-old nephew of the bride read it so beautifully. It brought smiles, laughter, and warmth to everyone in the room.

Below, you’ll find the full text of the poem and a video from the wedding, along with tips on how to include it in your own ceremony.

Getting Married Means You’ll Have by Nicholas Gordon

Getting married means you’ll have
Someone’s hand to hold,
Even when you’re feeling sick,
Even when you’re old.

It means when you sit down to eat,
Someone will be there,
So you won’t have to tell your day
To an empty chair.

It means that when you need some help,
Someone will help out,
Someone always near to you
So you won’t have to shout.

But best of all is when it’s time
To turn out all the lights:
You won’t have to be alone
Those long and scary nights.

So even though you don’t have toys,
You don’t have to care:
Once you’re married, you can be
Each other’s teddy bear.

About This Reading & How to Use It

This reading is playful, heartfelt, and resonates with couples and guests alike — and it works especially well when read by a child, adding a sweet and memorable touch. Here’s how to include it in your wedding:

  • Who can read it: A friend, family member, the couple, or even a child. Having a young reader, like in our video example, brings an extra layer of charm and warmth to the moment.
  • Where to place it: After the officiant’s introduction, just before the vows or as a standalone reading to create a lighthearted, heartfelt moment.
  • Timing: About 1–2 minutes — short enough to keep the ceremony flowing, long enough to make an impact.
  • Tone / delivery: Keep it warm, playful, and natural. Encourage the reader to smile, pause for laughs, and connect with the audience.
  • Add a personal touch: Pair the reading with a short story or anecdote about the couple to make the moment extra memorable.
